President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition

A couple of weeks ago I attended the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PCFSN) meeting. One of the many goals of the meeting was to discuss the current status of school-based physical activity and physical education.
The meeting bought together a who’s who in professional sports, fitness, exercise, and government. The council is chaired by three-time Olympian Dominique Dawes and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees. I got to speak to Phoenix Suns small forward Grant Hill who is also a council member. Other notable council members include: Michelle Kwan, Billie Jean King, Chris Paul, Dr. Ian Smith and Allyson Felix. I was happy to be there but troubled by the council’s lack of Latino representation. Not one member of the council is Latino. There is one Latino on their newly created National Foundation on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition Foundation, his name is Raul J. Fernandez.

All council members are determined through the White House Presidential Personnel Office and “everyone” has to apply www.whitehouse.gov. Currently, the council has nine available appointments and everyone has to be vetted by the White House.

There are many noteworthy exercise physiologists, nutritionists, policy folk and fitness professionals who are Latino and would add tremendous value to the council. My fav five are: Marco Borges, Tony Martinez, Patricia Moreno, Beto Perez and Marcelo Ehrhardt.

The best part of the event was getting to meet my fitness icon, Donna Joyner. Donna, who is the longest member of the council, served on it under Bush Jr. was the first national fitness professional to break into the mainstream. The 54 year old–yes, 54!–is in amazing shape and basking in her hugely successful “Body Gospel® Workout: Your Faith-Based Weight Loss Solution.” Donna is married to Tom Joyner, host of the nationally syndicated The Tom Joyner Morning Show.
